• LinMesa hit the nail right on the head. Brewer wasn't even a serious contender until she put her signature on the abomination that is SB1070. Now, suddenly, she is the greatest thing since sliced bread... At least in the eyes of the twisted right-wing bigots who currently appear to dominate the vote in this state. This recall effort will gain no traction. Nor should it, since Brewer was democratically elected. But it's nice to see that people are still willing to speak out against inept leadership.

• It is hard to imagine a governor worse than Jan Brewer. But she is what the voters of Arizona wanted, so now we have to suffer at her cold, incompetent hands for at least four more years.

• Correct, Governor, we Arizonans are not "quitters". We will fight for the Constitution and for human rights and never give up. And SB1070 will ultimately fail. As for Ms. Palin, that's a quitter of epic proportions. And what a great example of family values, you are, Ms. Palin. In my opinion, Ms. Palin is just a highly paid sideshow attraction for the Republican party.

• Apparently the Governor's truth-telling task force that she set up in May using a quarter million dollars of tax money has had no effect at all. It was supposed to spread "the truth" about SB1070 and convince businesses that Arizona really is a welcoming place. But it seems it was just another politically expedient boondoggle, courtesy of us taxpayers. While I am glad to see people across the nation taking a stand against Arizona's RACISM, I am also saddened that we continue to suffer at the hands of right-wing extremist politicians who care more about their political careers than doing the right thing. • One thing I have seen borne out in these posts repeatedly is that arrogance and ignorance really do go hand-in-hand. Arizona consistently ranks last in the nation in education achievement and standards. And Arizona is where a law like SB1070 has gained traction, making the arrogant bigots feel emboldened. As one commenter aptly put it: SB1070 has made it cool to be a racist... At least among a small, loud, arrogant minority.

• Excellent article, Mr. Fischer. While I was very pleased to see the most egregious portions of SB1070 enjoined from taking effect, sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to let it go into effect and let some U.S. citizens be harassed to prove their status. Then there would be a public outcry against it. The basic problem here in Arizona, which I believe is exemplified beautifully by the two anonymous comments preceding mine, is that there is a shortage of highly educated, rational, and forward-thinking individuals here in Arizona. This is compounded by the fact that the state government is controlled by right-wing extremists. I think if Arizona would focus more on education and less on building jails and prisons, we might be able to pull away from the short-sighted and stilted thinking that is so pervasive here.

• I agree with elziav completely. I couldn't have said it better. Poorman's comments are a wonderful example of the ignorance that is rampant here in Arizona. To Poorman, I say: if you don't like having people here in Arizona who fight for what is right, then why don't YOU leave? We are here to stay! We don't leave when we see something we disagree with. We fight for change.
