  • article Letters: Parents need to shoulder the blame for obesity

    Monday, April 4, 2011 5:00 am

As awareness of child obesity increases, the call for actions preventing it also increase. I have been a first-hand witness of schools making efforts by removing soda vending machines from campuses. Even fast food franchises like McDonald’s have joined the effort by giving kids choices between fries and apples for a side and soda and juice for a drink, which gives them a chance to be a little healthier (even if they are apples with caramel). But Happy Meals are still in danger of being stripped of the toy prizes that have been such a tradition. Why? Because the responsibility for the growing obesity rates is not being placed where it needs to be. I fully agree with Jim Weier’s call to “ask the parents who are supposed to be ultimately responsible,” since what it all really comes down to is personal responsibility. This is something that is being fast forgotten in a society where morals are legislated, not taught.
