  • article Lemire: 'Gangster Squad' is a numbing barrage

    Friday, January 11, 2013 12:45 am

"Gangster Squad," a pulpy, violent tale of cops and mobsters in 1949 Los Angeles, rides an uncomfortable line between outlandishness and outright parody, and it's difficult to tell which is director Ruben Fleischer's intention. Which is a problem.

  • article It’s easy to give thanks for the good things, but what about the difficult stuff?

    Thursday, November 22, 2012 12:49 pm

Thanksgiving time is here. It’s easy to give thanks for the good things, but what about the difficult stuff? We are supposed to maintain thankful attitudes even IN the midst of trials (give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. [1 Thessalonians 5:18]), but what about actually being thankful FOR the trials? Ephesians 5:20 says we are to be “always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

  • article ‘The Queen of Versailles:’ Nothing more than a reality show

    Monday, August 13, 2012 3:34 pm

‘The Queen of Versailles” has earned a lot of hype over the past few months, scoring considerable praise from critics and the Sundance Film Festival. The notion that such a film could resonate with anybody other than the 1 percent baffles me. This is a movie about unsympathetic billionaires that are so self-centered that they had to make a documentary about their alleged financial struggle. To refer to it as a “documentary” would diminish the value of the genre. “The Queen of Versailles” is nothing more than a reality show stretched to an hour and 40 minutes that belongs with the likes of the Kardashians on E!

  • article SRP customers help reforest areas devastated by Arizona fires

    Saturday, August 4, 2012 8:15 am

Each year, as forest fires rage across the state, it’s heartbreaking to see thousands of trees consumed by flames. Just a few months ago, the Gladiator Fire blazed through more than 16,000 acres in the Prescott National Forest; and last year, the Wallow Fire destroyed more than 530,000 acres of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, making it the largest forest fire in the state’s history. Unfortunately, many residents lost their homes in both of these fires, and all of us have lost so much that these tranquil forests have to offer.
