Mesa is moving forward with a plan to have liquor licenses at two city-owned entities - the Arizona Museum for Youth and the Arizona Museum of Natural History. The idea is to make these venues more attractive as options for fundraisers and other events by making it easier for organizers. With a year-round liquor license in place, event organizers would not have to apply for a special permit, so the required paperwork is less, said Randy Vogel, director of theaters and operations at the Mesa Arts Center. Hit by budget cuts, the city's arts and cultural department has been trying to come up with ways to boost revenue. Vogel said they're focusing on booking more weddings, receptions and corporate parties in efforts to increase activities other than shows. Last year, the museums made about $3,000 in event revenue, including birthday parties and private events. This year, officials hope to collect between $15,000 and $25,000 in revenue.
