It was about this time a season ago that the Goldwater Bulldogs boy soccer team paid a visit to Deer Valley High School. At that time a superior Skyhawks team watched a hustling scrappy Bulldogs team force a shootout, eventually beating Deer Valley in a thrilling game. Fast forward to Tuesday and the Deer Valley Skyhawks found themselves with a 3-2 halftime lead following 40 minutes of seemingly dominant soccer. "Clearly we outplayed them, but we made two mistakes and they took advantage of them," Deer Valley coach Rick Anderson said following the game. While they had squandered a second half lead a season ago there would be no comeback by the Bulldogs on this night. This year's Skyhawks team has seemingly matured from last year's edition that was eliminated in the first round of the 5A Div-II state playoffs as the No. 8 seed. Behind a hat trick from junior Manuel Ramero the Skyhawks earned a 4-2 win to improve to 14-1 on the season. "This year we all know each other very well, which helps us play better together," said the Skyhawks star with the help of one of his teammates as an interpreter. In this one Deer Valley would find itself down a goal less than eight minutes into the game when goalie Fransisco Marmolejo would make his only mistakes of the night. On a direct kick from approximately 45 yards out the Skyhawks keeper went into the air to try and bring down the ball. When he mishandled the shot Goldwater freshman Kyle Summerhill was waiting to pounce on the rebound, hammering it home from 15 yards out. The Skyhawks would knot the game in similar fashion four minutes later when a shot attempt bounced away from a sliding Kyle Wentzel. Deer Valley junior Josh McAvoy made the Bulldogs goalie pay, blasting home the loose ball to tie the game 1-1. Less than two minutes later Ramero got into the scoring act on a lead pass that hit the forward in stride down the west sideline. Romero took the feed and dribbled in before giving his team the lead with a shot to the far corner. Deer Valley's inability to handle the ball in its own end would cause them to cough up their first lead as senior Tyler Watterson mishandled a pass at the top of the 18-yard box. An opportunistic Jose Lugo of the Bulldogs snagged the loose ball and in an instant had it in the back of the net past a defenseless Marmolejo. "We definitely have to play better come playoff time, but I wasn't worried," Anderson said. "We had a lot of good scoring opportunities that we simply didn't capitalize on, but we've always been a second half team." Ramero would make sure his team would at least salvage a halftime lead when a through ball from senior Carlos Garcia hit the junior in stride up the west side of the field. This time the Skyhawks star would dribble in closer before putting one off the leg and in by a sliding Wentzel. The second half would largely be controlled by the Skyhawks however Goldwater remained within striking distance until the game's final minute. On a pair of ocassions Marmolejo came up big aggressively going after corner kicks. In both instances he snatched dangerous balls out of the air to prevent Goldwater potentially tying the game. "At one point when they had it down in our end down only 3-2 I was kind of freaked out that they might tie it up, but we held them off," said Ramero, who earned his hat trick with less than a minute to play when a bouncing inbound pass caromed off his back and into the net. After being a No. 8 seed in last year's playoffs Anderson said his team has high expectations this year. "We definitely think we should be somewhere in the top four and then we'll see what we can do in the playoffs," he said. "We need to be more consistent, but tonight we were playing with some sick tired guys. It wasn't our best game, but I was proud of the effort. We'll be where we need to be come the playoffs."
