    A fifth-grader at Chandler’s Knox Elementary School died in a single vehicle accident over the weekend near Tucson, according to the Chandler Unified School District. A letter was sent home Tuesday telling Knox families that their children were informed of the death and a crisis team would be on campus, district spokesman Terry Locke said.

    Elementary schools in the Chandler Unified School District will soon have security cameras. The governing board voted 2-1 on three contracts totalling $1.3 million to put a 12-camera system at each of the 29 K-6 schools. Two board members were out of town Wednesday, but there was a quorum with the three other members. Board members Bob Rice and Annette Auxier approved the measure. Board member David Evans voted against it.

    The Chandler Unified School District governing board voted 5-0 Wednesday night to open The Academy at Knox Elementary School beginning with the 2011-12 school year in July. Nine empty classrooms at the school, 700 W. Orchid Lane, will be used for a self-contained gifted program (known as CATs, or Chandler Academically Talented Students) with an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, mathematics and fine arts.
