Gayle Shanks, co-owner of Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe, said she's glad Arizona has reached an agreement for Amazon.com to collect state sales tax. She said not collecting state sales tax gives the online giant an unfair price advantage.

Our View: The Obama administration is considering taxing motorists on how many miles they drive, the so-called vehicle mileage tax. Federal highway construction is financed by a gas tax, which Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told The Associated Press “is an antiquated system for funding our highways.”
Linda Cotter, owner of LC Accounting Services in Ahwatukee Foothills, urges taxpayers to choose their tax preparers wisely: “You should have an experienced tax preparer who knows what the legitimate tax deductions are. I always suggest finding out how long they have been in business because there is no tax preparer licensing in Arizona.”

Recently, CNN reported rampant income tax fraud of a new sort. Thieves steal social security numbers then file tax returns on the accounts of these social security numbers. They then receive the refunds that were due honest working citizens. The segment went on to suggest the IRS is not doing its part to curtail such activities.

The Internal Revenue Service is warning senior citizens and other taxpayers to beware of an emerging scheme tempting them to file tax returns that claim fraudulent refunds. Refunds are promised to people who have little or no income and normally don’t have a tax filing requirement. The con artists tell their victims they can obtain a tax refund or nonexistent stimulus payment based on the American Opportunity Tax Credit, even if the victim was not enrolled in or paying for college.
