    Sun City residents in a neighborhood near 99th Avenue and Beardsley Road were awakened early this morning by the presence of a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad after live hand grenades were found in the home of a man who had recently died.

    The Sun City West resident didn’t notice when a mosquito bit him during a trip to Illinois in August 2010. “We were at an outside gathering, and there were a lot of mosquitoes around,” Klomhaus said. “Based on the incubation period, that’s where we think it happened.”

    Ruth McLaughlin is worried her Sun City neighborhood has a problem with roof rats. “We have an infestation over here,” she said of her neighborhood near Peoria Avenue and Clair Drive. McLaughlin and her husband, John, saw a rat several weeks ago near their home in the early morning, and killed another rat, or maybe the same one they saw, with a shovel over Fourth of July weekend.

    The widespread flu outbreak throughout Arizona apparently hasn’t hit the West Valley. Health officials say visits to area hospitals this year due to the spread of the flu have been typical as in years past and that they have only seen a handful of patients each week seeking treatment for the airborne illness.
