When thousands of athletes gather this week in Mesa for the Special Olympics Arizona Summer Games, they'll be needing some sports wear. So sponsor NextCare Urgent Care is asking the public to help out by dropping off socks, shoes and laces, shirts, shorts, hats and sweatshirts or jackets in various sizes at its 17 locations in the metro area by Monday.
A feature-length documentary following two East Valley teams through a Special Olympics basketball tournament premiered Friday in Chandler.
About 100 students got off the sidelines and onto the playing field Thursday at Stapley Junior High School in the first Special Olympics in seven years for Mesa schoolchildren with severe disabilities.

Derian Spivey and Dillon Janger, students at Mountain Pointe High School in Ahwatukee, spend at least one day a weekend together. And while they normally grab a pizza lunch, last Saturday they played flag football against a group from Marcos de Niza during half-time at the Division I Football State Championships.
Chandler's Michael Tom, 27, will participate in the flag football competition at the Special Olympics in Nebraska beginning Monday.
