Baseball will have a grind of a playoff schedule upcoming for those not among the top eight seeds, but softball — especially Division I — appears to be deeper than ever. Or, at least, deeper than the past five years.

Three years ago, a bunt, overthrow, or bobbled grounder led to a 1-0 win or loss.
Rick McConnell didn’t intend to spend the last 28 years coaching boys basketball at Dobson.
NEW YORK — Adele dominated last year's Grammy Awards, but this year there isn't a clear winner in sight.
WASHINGTON — Buying your own health insurance will never be the same.
Here's my annual list looking at 2012:

Remember a year ago, when the circus came to TV?
WASHINGTON — Sarah Palin and George W. Bush won't be in Tampa, Fla. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Al Gore won't make the trip to Charlotte, N.C. And scores of other Republican and Democratic stars are taking a pass as their parties gather for this year's national conventions.
SALT LAKE CITY -- Five years ago, as Republicans were getting to know Mitt Romney, a Gallup poll showed 30 percent of GOP voters expressly saying they wouldn't vote for a Mormon for president.
The team portion of the boys basketball summer season has come to an end, as the players now split up and travel the nation with their club ball teams for the July evaluation period.
A new survey shows Rick Santorum is within the range of a statistical dead heat of Mitt Romney with just a week to go to Arizona's presidential primary.

It was nauseating to witness the lineup of presidential wannabees at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's offices in downtown Phoenix last fall looking to be anointed by the unholy one as the heir apparent to John McCain as the Party's 2012 nominee.
It was nauseating to witness the lineup of presidential wannabees at Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's offices in downtown Phoenix last fall looking to be anointed by the unholy one as the heir apparent to John McCain as the Party's 2012 nominee. Michelle Bachman, Herman Cain and Rick Perry all came looking for Arpaio's endorsement. They were tripping over each other attempting to one-up the other as the meanest and toughest candidate to earn Arpaio's blessings. Herman Cain went as far as to suggest the use of machine guns to mow ‘em down at the Border. Why not moats with alligators, or maybe steel traps? After all, the Justice Department uncovered evidence that Arpaio had systemically referred to them as "animals." Why isn't Arpaio in jail and, frankly, who cares who he endorses for president?
"Everywhere I go, all I see is our younger generation walking around looking like cell-phone zombies. Is it just me or are others of you out there as concerned as I am?"
I believe Newt Gingrich (we should call him "The Grinch") and Rick Perry's attacks on Mitt Romney's years at Bain will backfire on them. They sound envious and desperate.
The attacks by his fellow contenders - Newt Gingrich, Jon Huntsman, Rick Santorum, and Rick Perry - on Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney for his successes at Bain Capital are disingenuous. The rivals are acting like Democrats. Romney's time at Bain epitomizes the type of success Republicans normally worship: financial self-improvement at the expense of the working man.
