Nostalgia comes in waves, not drizzles, and the 1970s nearly drowned me last week. On Wednesday, I watched my godson graduate from Chaparral High School. At least that's what he thinks I was doing, and I was, mostly.

I got up shortly after 1 a.m. today to watch the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. We were eight time zones behind. The technology of broadcasting was light years ahead of that provided by the wedding we watched in the middle of the night back in 1981 for William’s mother, Diana, and Prince Charles, also held in Westminster Abbey. In retrospect, that one 30 years ago seemed staid and more sober. Where did the 30 years go?

Recently we visited Tempe again for another graduation. We stayed locally, ate locally, golfed and shopped locally. How impressed I was to emerge from a restaurant to find a parking ticket for being 30 feet too close to a stop sign (with no warning sign). I observed a lot of vehicles so ticketed. What a ludicrous attempt by your city council and mayor to line the city coffers with a small amount when in retrospect I and other visitors spent a lot of money. As a retired police officer, I know our town's policy was to welcome and be easy on visitors for minor infractions so they would return and spend money again. In these hard economic times all towns need to wise up and be smart to encourage growth and tourism. All your mayor and city council members did for me was encourage me to visit a different city.
