I have a lengthy list of things I should do but don’t get around to, such as cleaning out the garage. A little monetary persuasion pushes me to action.
Tempe has launched a pilot program to increase recycling at apartment complexes by rewarding tenants with coupons based on how much they recycle. Eleven complexes now have bins that measure how much each unit recycles, and the city estimates the average family can get up to $200 a year in coupons for local and national retailers. About 3,000 units are involved.
A Mesa recycling program that gives participants rewards has seen a slight uptick in the reusable material being placed into the bins.
Fourth-grader Avery Clark already pitches in to recycle milk and juice cartons at school. On Wednesday, Clark, 9, decided to add paper to his list, after his school, Kerr Elementary, was recognized by Mesa for its recycling initiatives.
