Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also called COPD, is the third leading cause of death in Arizona. It is a disease that damages the lungs and restricts the airways, making it difficult to get air in and out.
Jamell Baca-Cazer, 38, opened the front door to her Mesa house, something she hasn’t been able to do in months. But underneath her shirt is a healing incision protecting a new pair of lungs that allowed her to celebrate Christmas with her family.

Phoenix Children’s Hospital, which has a clinic in Mesa, has been ranked among the top 50 children’s hospitals in half of the specialties reported in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. In the annual survey, the survey ranked in the top 50 for nephrology, neurology/neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology.
Each day, on average, 24 children are brought into the world at Banner Children’s Hospital in Mesa. That’s a baby every hour. Morning, noon and night.
