Attention churches: The Mesa Prayer Walk is seeking churches willing to "encircle the city in prayer" at 3 p.m. Jan. 8, 2012. According to a news release, the goal is for groups as small as one or as large as 100 to walk one perimeter mile of the city, "praying for spiritual protection, political wisdom, and economic prosperity in the year ahead."

It figures.

Americans will be asked this Thursday to take time to pray at least five minutes for what is being called "The Freedom Five," or the "Five Points of Prayer: Government (including the military), media, education, church and family."

Thousands of Arizonans are expected to gather today outside public buildings and in parks, stadiums and houses of worship for the 52 nd annual observance of the National Day of Prayer.

Unlike many other nations, in this country you can pray without the benefit of someone from the government handing you a script of what to tell God.

A dozen Sun City churches will gather next week in fellowship, breaking bread and praying with one another for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity services. The Week of Prayer dates back more than 100 years worldwide but has been a part of Sun City for approximately a decade. Marshall Esty, event coordinator and a member of the Church of Palms, said many local churches don’t have any opportunities to worship with other denominations.

As I sit in my office to begin writing this month’s column, my eyes are drawn to the closet door. On it are numerous heart-shaped sticky notes on which I have written names. It is my “wall of prayers.”
