    Friday, October 15, 2010 9:24 am

A man convicted in the January slaying of a Gilbert police officer has been sentenced to more than 100 years in prison.

Damien Irizarry was found guilty in July on eight counts of aggravated assault, four counts of drive-by shooting and one count of unlawful flight in connection with the Jan. 28 shooting death of Lt. Eric Shuhandler.

A Maricopa County Superior Court judge gave Irizarry a 107½-year prison term Thursday.

The 31-year-old Irizarry claims he was "an unarmed innocent bystander" at the time of his arrest following a 50-mile high-speed pursuit. Another man is accused of killing Shuhandler during a traffic stop and is scheduled to stand trial next year.

Police say the 42-year-old Shuhandler stopped the two suspects for an obstructed license plate before he was shot in the head.
