Reality has a habit of raining down hard and melting away the comforts formed by the kindness of imagination and the vagaries of memory. There’s the way a person wants to remember an event that occurred in his or her life, and then there’s the way the event actually played out, complete with details absent of sympathy.
For college kids who move off-campus, learning to accommodate the styles and needs of housemates is good practice for life after school.
For many these days, the idea of grabbing a handful of quarters and trooping to an arcade instead of merely logging into a game from home seems an outlandish idea. This, however, is the spirit behind the inaugural Retrocade event set for Aug. 9-10 by the Gaming Zone and This Old Arcade in Tempe.
CHATHAM, Mass. — In "Jaws," the fictional mayor tried to protect the summer tourism season by keeping a lid on reports of the man-eater lurking offshore. As sightings of great white sharks mount off Cape Cod in real life, however, businesses in the Massachusetts town of Chatham are embracing the frenzy.

The signs in front of local schools do not carry a message that most kids want to hear — “School Begins in Early August.” In spite of protests, our kids are now making the usual preparations: buying school supplies, school clothes and often a new backpack. Whether old or new, some guidelines for using backpacks will come in handy for both youth and their parents.

NEW YORK — Family travel falls into three distinct phases. First, there's the exhausting period of travel with crying babies who need diapers, bottles, strollers, car seats and naps. Then come the golden years, when kids can handle long rides and long walks, when they actually think scavenger hunts are fun, and when they bask in their family's love and attention.
At the risk of mixing metaphors, the cards were stacked against Dungeons & Dragons as the venerable roleplaying game embarked upon its 5th Edition this summer. The last incarnation (4th Edition) met with withering criticism from longtime players with its attempts to appeal to computer gamers, while a rival took advantage of the 3rd Edition’s open-source license to re-create that popular version in all but name and take it places just about everyone had always wanted to go.
Mesa quickly rebuffs online ‘boring’ image. Growing up in western Pennsylvania, our little town of Aliquippa, a one-steel-mill town that went 7 miles down the Ohio River, employed over 80 percent of all workers. Even in the late 1970s and ’80s, our downtown was more vibrant than Mesa’s. In the heat of the summer, when business was traditionally slow, the merchants came up with a three-day event called ”Rodeo Days.” Everybody dressed in cowboy outfits and all the merchants had special offers, free bus rides, music and lots of free food and beverages. It was a family affair and everyone had fun. Next to the Christmas holiday season, Rodeo Days was a crowd pleaser, brought fun traffic to downtown and increased sales tax revenues. It went on for over 20 years. We had restaurants, stores, movie theaters, nightclubs and taverns when the steel mill workers got off their shifts. There were great clothing stores and home furnishing stores, or anything you needed. Pittsburgh’s downtown had the largest department stores like Gimbels, great night life, professional sports and entertainment.

To say that the new Adam Sandler movie, "Blended," is better than some of his other recent work — "Jack and Jill," for example — isn't saying much. After all, some natural disasters cause less damage than others. But none are a positive development.
