President Obama’s new “religious tolerance” consultant to the Pentagon, Mikey Weinstein, wants Christian military service members who openly talk about their faith in uniform to be charged with treason, which is a crime punishable by death according to military law.
The Arizona Cardinals didn’t need this.
WASHINGTON — This may be the year Congress decides what to do about the millions of immigrants living illegally in the U.S. And this may be the week when a bipartisan group of senators makes public details of the overhaul plan it has been negotiating for months.
A colleague of mine quipped the other day that the only religion he believes in is his own. “Sure,” I countered. “You piously believe in your own opinion.”
Pinal County authorities will decide whether to file charges against two Apache Junction high school students accused of bullying a junior high student.
“Ben Arredondo violated the public trust to enhance his personal wealth and image in excess of the legal and moral limits. There are few lower than him in society, maybe only child molesters. Now his buddies, Democrats, act like he is a persecuted choir boy.”
Gilbert’s Higley Center for the Performing Arts will host hundreds of students from across the Valley during an anti-bully program Wednesday and Thursday.
Stan Way, a Latter-day Saint from Jasper, Ala., had just finished dinner out with some Mormon missionaries when he noticed a car slowing as it approached.
• 23 million Americans are out of work, have stopped looking for work, or are underemployed.
The bullying epidemic continues, even as a multi-pronged crackdown by states and educators gathers steam. For nine months, I dealt first-hand with the bullying issue almost every school day. The problem most assuredly is out there, and across the nation steps are being taken to focus on it.
We can all stop pretending continued Republican anger about the Affordable Care Act is news. Some figured a Supreme Court ruling would settle things. And since the GOP said it was unconstitutional with the same fervor as people who’ve read the Constitution—it was easy to assume a decision from the nine justices in the highest court in the land—regardless of the outcome—would chill them out.
When that little group of Separatists left England for the New World in a little boat called the Mayflower, they landed at Plymouth Rock in a territory that would eventually become known as the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Colony became, obviously, the seedbed for the nation whose birthday we celebrate this week.
Must you print letters like the one from Patrick Shepherd of Mesa, “Do homosexuals deserve more rights?” (AFN, May 13)
Bertha Hofer deserves to be one of the summer's biggest, if unlikeliest, TV stars.
What rights does a homosexual deserve more than what I have?

Thanks so much for printing Michelle Dillard’s response to my letter of April 11, 2012 regarding allowing business owners to limit their employees’ health insurance based on the owner’s religious beliefs. It is nice to know that someone reads my letters. Unfortunately, it is sad that Ms. Dillard did not comprehend my comments. She offers rebuttals to positions I never took and arguments I never made.
Mesa’s Human Relations Advisory Board will host a “Bullying in America” event April 28, with speakers from the educational, legal and business community. The event will focus on the impact of bullying and how to prevent and respond to it in schools, the workplace and online.
In his letter attacking another writer, Edward F. Murphy fails to recognize that employers do not have to offer any insurance. My son works for a small business and receives no health care benefits at all. He would be happy to to have coverage that excludes blood transfusions or even to have insurance that covered nothing but broken bones.
An East Valley state senator is blaming a Christian family values lobbying group for killing legislation designed to strengthen laws that require schools to crack down on bullying.
In order to understand Iran, we need some background. Dating to before World War II, Iran has attempted to balance the influences upon it from its neighbors, both Russia and the West. In 1941, Britain and the USSR invaded Iran to use Iranian railroad capacity. During World War II, the Shah (king) was obliged to abdicate in favor of his son, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. At that time a relatively long-lived parliament had been governing Iran. However, its prime minister was assassinated in 1951 and was replaced by Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh whose selection was ratified by Shah Reza Pahlavi. Enormously popular, Mosaddegh nationalized Iran’s petroleum industry, leading to President Eisenhower’s authorization of Operation Ajax in 1953, the first successful open US sponsored overthrow of an elected, civilian government, Cold War Democracy in action!
Just as books containing sex, violence, and pervasive language are banned in most public schools, The Bible should be no exception. Though it is lacking unacceptable language and graphic scenes of gore and sex, the simple idea of teaching the Bible in public schools goes beyond inappropriate. Regardless of stance on religion or religious background, public schools are no place to be preaching something so controversial.
I think we should all support Senator Lori Klein and her well-thought-out SB 1065. This bill would bring much needed liberty and freedom from oppression to dog guardians and the precious dogs they care for. I firmly believe that the current laws, and regulations of HMOs etc., concerning dogs, are full of tyranny and harsh persecution.
