    TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona State University on Tuesday will officially open a new veterans center on its Tempe campus named after ex-NFL star and Army Ranger Pat Tillman.

    The Pat Tillman Veterans Center is a 3,300-square-foot facility in the university's Memorial Union that will provide academic support to the school's growing enrollment of military veterans.

    The goal of the center is to help veterans make a smooth transition to school life.

    Tillman played linebacker for Arizona State from 1994-97 and went on to an NFL career with the Cardinals. He enlisted in the Army after three seasons in the NFL.

    He died in Afghanistan in 2004 in a friendly fire incident.
