  • article AIA tabs state semifinal football sites

    Wednesday, November 21, 2007 2:15 pm

The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced Tuesday the sites for the Nov. 30 state semifinal football games. For the fourth consecutive season the Centennial Coyotes will be at Glendale Community College (6000 W. Olive Ave) trying to punch their ticket to the state title game. Set for a 7 p.m. kickoff, the top seeded and defending state champion Coyotes (11-1) will take on No. 5 Sunnyside (10-2). The Blue Devils have only been beaten on the field once this season as their second loss came by forfeit. Following a victory over Marana Mountain View Oct. 19, Sunnyside discovered they had unknowingly allowed an illegible player to take the field during a 49-42 victory. The team's only other loss came the next week in a 15-14 nail-biter to Ironwood Ridge, a defeat it avenged in Friday's 5A Div-II quarterfinals as Sunnyside earned a 21-14 win in the rematch. Centennial's road to the semifinals has been much smoother. Following a Week 2 loss to defending 5A Div-I state champion Hamilton, the Coyotes have run off 10 consecutive victories, most of which have come in lopsided fashion. Following a 56-14 win in the opening round of the playoffs over No. 16 La Joya, the Coyotes had little trouble with No. 8 Desert Ridge, beating the spots off the Jaguars in a 51-8 rout. The semifinal matchup between the Blue Devils and Coyotes will mark the third consecutive season the two teams have met in the playoffs. After defeating Sunnyside in the 2005 quarterfinals, Centennial defeated the Blue Devils in last year's state championship game. While Centennial will take on a Tucson team in Glendale in the state semifinals, the Peoria Panthers (10-2), the No. 7 seed in the 4A Div-I ranks, will be headed to Tucson Nov. 30 as their 7 p.m. neutral-site game against No. 6 Tucson Canyon del Oro (11-1) will be at Tucson High School (400 N. Second Ave., Tucson). Canyon del Oro earned its semifinal bid with wins over No. 11 Cienega (38-7) and then last week 34-0 over No. 14 Prescott. Overall, the Doradoes have won eight straight games. Peoria, which has a five-game winning streak, earned its second consecutive semifinal berth with playoff victories over No. 10 Marana (30-12) and then 53-17 over No. 15 McClintock in last week's quarterfinals.
