NEW THIS WEEK
It’s no secret that men like Keith Richards, John Lennon and Frank Sinatra are the first to be mentioned when talking about the evolution of music. But what about women like Joan Jett and Tina Turner, who are equally responsible for putting rock and roll on the map?
“On earth peace, goodwill toward men,” sang the angels on the first Christmas morning. The Hebrew word for peace is shalom. In Judaism shalom is a living concept, not a word; a vision for how ...
“The mother of the 14-year-old murdered and left in a dumpster brought this scumbag convict into her family’s life. She should be charged with child neglect and as an accomplice to murder.”
After watching two very good college football teams go at it last night, I felt compelled to express my thoughts regarding the seemingly prevailing culture of sports fans. Even though the final score was in favor of Stanford, I found it quite disturbing regarding two items: the TV commentators and the home team’s fans. Until it was evident that Stanford had thoroughly trounced ASU, the TV men could not talk enough about ASU, its seven straight home wins, its fabulous coach, Todd Graham, his PAC-12 Coach of the Year honors, while panning the ASU faithful while not once showing any of the Stanford fans in the stadium. I might add full disclosure: I am an former ASU varsity letter winner in baseball and I have a grandson playing for Stanford.
A cinematic sparring match unlike any other in recent memory, “Some Velvet Morning” offers an unflinching glimpse into the lives of an alluring prostitute, Velvet (Alice Eve), and her domineering lover, Fred (Stanley Tucci). Over the course of 83 minutes, we eavesdrop on this toxic pair as they engage in an impassioned war of words – chatting, groping, yelling and sobbing, all within the confines of her upscale townhouse. Written and directed by Tony-nominated playwright Neil LaBute, this low-budget chamber piece has been flying under the radar since its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, but will surely blindside audiences this winter with nuanced performances and a certain shocking plot twist. Ahead of its Valley release at Harkins Shea 14 in Scottsdale this weekend, GetOut spoke with LaBute about the film, his French influences, and experience collaborating with Tucci and Eve.
“We three kings of Orient are.” So begins a favorite carol of the Advent season about the “Wise Men” who visit the newborn Jesus. And so begins a tale that takes inaccuracy and historical revisionism ...
Let's all stop being coy and fess up, shall we? The truth is, even those of us who work with cookbooks, write about cookbooks, collect cookbooks — heck, even write cookbooks ourselves — don't actually cook from cookbooks. At least not nearly as frequently as we'd like to/promise ourselves we will/tell others we do.
Three men have been indicted for allegedly murdering a 36-year-old man in Mesa on Halloween night.
The chill of winter means basketball is already underway with a plethora of early-season games and tournaments, and yet the question remains:
Authorities from the Tempe Police Department have arrested two teenagers for allegedly conspiring to murder one of the teen's grandmothers.
What’s with all the political posturing and saber-rattling by our “desk jockey admirals and generals” in the House and Senate? We see them rabidly calling for everything short of “carpet bombing” Tehran and turning it into another Dresden. Of course, none (or almost none) of the military-aged sons (or daughters for that matter) of these politicians have ever been in or ever will be in the U.S. military and have to fight in the wars that their mommies and daddies vote for.
“Biden, Kerry and Obama had it right in 2006. It would be foolish to invoke the nuclear option in the Senate. I guess Obama’s greed for power has overtaken his intelligence. That’s okay, everyone now should know his true goal is to be king, not president. History will remove the upper case and remember him as ‘president.’”
Everything about the murderspree which ended with 17 people dead over the course of 21 days, began in Mesa in 1973. It started on Oct. 28 when two men — Doug Gretzler and Willie Steelman, neither yet 30 years old at the time — kidnapped two Mesa residents, drove them to California, and killed them brutally and without mercy.
LOS ANGELES — In a world of on-demand video and movies shrunken to the size of smartphone screens, home-entertainment releases need something special to stand out. The following box sets offer more than movies for every cinephile on your holiday list.
GLENDALE – Norris Vaughan was engulfed into the sea of black.
Thanksgiving hadn’t even come! But still, nearly a week ago, I could already say that I had lost my membership in the Holiday Kindness to Others Club.
It’s a place where cultures clash but also where sports and comic memorabilia collectors can converge.
I can’t imagine being a Child Protective Services caseworker. But I can imagine why most of those men and women went into those jobs: an idealistic view that their work could make a difference in children’s lives, maybe save some kids from horrible fates, maybe find ways to change a dysfunctional family into a loving one.
