This Monday, June 25, 2012 file image released by Starpix shows actors Emma Stone, left, and Andrew Garfield with director Marc Webb from "The Amazing Spider-Man," at the Empire State Building during a lighting ceremony in New York. Stone, Garfield and Webb replace Kirsten Dunst, Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi from the previous films in the hugely popular Spider-man franchise. "The Amazing Spider-Man" opens nationwide on July 3.
It’s impossible to avoid the comparisons, so we may as well just get them out of the way early so we can move on.
NEW YORK — Jamie Foxx, who stars in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," knows something about the double-life of a superhero.
It has been six years since Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Farris sat in the director’s chair, but the “Little Miss Sunshine” helmers have made a magnificent return with “Ruby Sparks,” one of the most intelligent and heartfelt comedies this year. It is theatrical in its over-the-top humor and deeply affecting in its more somber moments, but is sure to make you leave the theater smiling.
NEW YORK — On a weekend in January of 2010, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios pivoted faster than even Spider-Man would dare.
Scottsdale entrepreneur Marc Lamoureux plans to make Alpha Vision, the company that he started 10 years ago in his basement, into the world leader in what he sees as a $1 billion virtual reality marketing industry.
Aaron Baddeley, the 2007 FBR Open champion, is among the latest golfers to commit to this year's field.
So what are the chances Barry Bonds can inject some hoopla into a horrible baseball season by hitting his 700th home run at Bank One Ballpark this weekend — a ball that could be worth more than $100,000 if some lucky fan can catch better than Scott Hairston or Chad Tracy?
Review: Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy tries to win girl back: It's a tale you've heard a million times before. But it's told in such a relatable, inventive way in "500 Days of Summer," it almost feels like the first time.
As superhero summers go, this one is truly super.

Early on I was afraid for this film – with every announcement of another character being added to the movie’s mix becoming another potentially convoluted dramatic layer – and sure enough, at 142 minutes, director Marc Webb has created a film that oozes superfluous storylines like a leaky web cartridge. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 still offers some spectacular action sequences, but its out-of-control narrative is far from being superior to the first film.
There aren’t too many more unusual names than Riggs Lennon.
Despite his record performances as a junior last year, it wouldn't have been totally unexpected to see John Wojciechowski lose an event at state this season.
You take the good with the bad.
The Centennial Coyotes and Sunrise Mountain Mustangs went to the 2006-2007 5A Div-II state quarterfinals. However, both enter the 2007-2008 season with largely untested rosters. The Ironwood Eagles have more experience. However, they enter the season coming off a season in which they won only seven games. In a Desert West Region which had the 5A Div-II state championship finalists in Tolleson and Westview, all three Peoria Unified School District teams know the bar has been set high if they're to measure up this season. CENTENNIAL Following a 24-7 season, the Coyotes enter the 2007-2008 season looking for new players to emerge. "When you have three girls that are three-year starters graduate all of a sudden it's much different at practice when none of them are there," said Centennial coach Matt Visintainer, who enters his seventh season as the Coyotes coach. "Now we've got a new group that are going to get their chance to shine." Junior guard Kelsey Ramstad, who averaged eight points and five rebounds a game a year ago will be one of the players that Visintainer will count on to contribute in numerous areas. "We'll probably run her everywhere from the one (point guard) to the four (power forward)," Visintainer said. "She plays bigger than she is." Seniors Tawny Wilson at center, and Lisette Torres at guard, along with juniors Jenna Rooks, Megan Webb and sophomore Kelley Mallon, all figure into the equation for the new-look Coyotes. "We're going to work the ball inside on offense and we're spending a lot of time emphasizing being a fundamentally sound team defensively," the coach said. "We're going to trap, pressure and be a transition squad, but we also need to be better with our half-court offense." The team hopes to get a lift by January from sophomore Tiffany Keys. After showing promise as a freshman, the guard tore her ACL this summer. "I think if we can limit our turnovers we can be a team that's scoring in the 50s and maybe into the 60s consistently this season," he said. SUNRISE MOUNTAIN After graduating eight seniors from a season ago, Gary Rath has plenty of questions as the 2007-2008 season gets under way. Coming off a 20-8 season in which his team thrived in transition, the only coach in Mustangs history said this year's squad will down shift. "Instead of pushing the tempo I think this year with the players we have we're going to need to hold teams down and control the tempo," Rath said. The controls of the offense go to junior point guard Darryl Putman (5-foot-7). "She learned a lot as a sophomore playing up against the older girls," Rath said. "She sees the floor well and the girls trust her. If they get open they're confident she'll get them the ball." Fellow junior Aria Ham (5-foot-9), who came on toward the end of last season, brings scoring punch. "She's lightning quick," Rath said. "She'll be effective offensively both inside and out." When senior center Ileana Sacffidi (6 foot) returns from a knee injury, Rath said his defense will rise to another level. "Our size is definitely an asset," the coach said. "Rath said. "With Ileana we're going to be tough to score on inside. I also think it will allow us to create mismatches offensively." Overall, Rath said his team's goal of winning the region will hinge on their ability to hold teams down defensively, with a goal of holding teams in the 40s. Sophomore guard Rachel Altman likely will be one of the team's better defensive players. "She goes 100 miles an hour all the time," the coach said. "Rachel really has a bulldog mentality. Her game is getting better all the time." The coach also expects a big season from senior Falan Odell, who he says is the most improved player in the program. "She proves what hard work and perseverance can do," Rath said. "She plays with so much more confidence now that when she was a freshman." With so many new faces, Rath said he's eager to see the chemistry of the team develop. "They're excited to learn and I really am looking forward to seeing them in game situations, how they respond to different things and what type of personality they have as a team," he said. "I think we'll make a lot of progress from the start of the season to when we get into the region schedule. Teams might overlook us because we have a lot of new players, but I think we'll be solid." IRONWOOD After two years away from coaching, the Eagles have a familiar face on the bench. In 14 seasons as Ironwood's coach, Robert Contrata compiled 275 coaching victories during a tenure that included six region titles, six trips to the state quarterfinals and eight 20-win seasons. While he inherits an Ironwood squad that went 7-18 a season ago and has won a total of nine games in the two years he was away from the program, the veteran coach said things aren't nearly as bad as the numbers might suggest. "I'm pleasantly surprised," Contrata said. "Knowing what they've done the last two years makes you a little apprehensive, but I've got some players. We have to get the respect of this program back to where it was, but these girls have taken direction well and are improving every practice." High school basketball fans who remember Contrata's team might be in for a surprise in how these Eagles go about their business. Instead of sitting in zone defenses and daring teams to penetrate against a wall comprised of 6-foot players, these Eagles plan to win with speed. "We'll have to full-court press to survive," Contrata said. "We just don't have the size, but what we do have is a fairly deep team where I can just keep putting people in the game that can keep the tempo at a high pace." Forward Vielka Carmicle at 5-foot-9 has two things the team lacks ? size as the team's tallest player and experience as one of only two seniors. "She'll be one of our best rebounders, she has a nice shot and she can run the floor," Contrata said. And if Carmicle gets the ball off the backboard, she'll have some gazelles ready to receive the outlet passes. "I have a hard time believing that there's a team around that has two girls as fast as Samantha (Grasso) and Jasmin (Mays)," Contrata said. "And then Tiffany (Levin) isn't far behind them." Contrata said the team's future looks bright with the trio of guards in Grasso, Mays and Levin. "All three of them handle the ball well and they can shoot," he said. Junior Gabrielle Martocci, a 3-point threat, and junior Janel Robertson (5-foot-7) also should be contributors for Contrata's Eagles. Despite playing in what was the toughest region in the 5A Div-II ranks a year ago, Contrata said his team plans to jump right in and be competitive. "Well, the goal for every team should be to compete for a region title," he said. "I think early on our offense will be ahead of our defense. Defensively, these girls have a long way to come. We're still teaching them a lot of structure, but offensively I think we'll be able to score and I think we can wear teams down with our tempo."
In the eight years I’ve taken on the regular duty of reviewing movies, 2012 just might have been the best. It wasn’t easy compiling a top 30 list for a 12-month period of so many diverse, outstanding films. I found myself having to make some absolutely painful snubs, including “Flight,” “The Sessions,” “The Hobbit: An Expected Journey,” and a little cinematic masterpiece by the name of “21 Jump Street.” In the end though, I managed to narrow the list down to the 20 titles that best encompass 2012 in all its glory. If you’re still behind on the movies of yesteryear, consider this your ultimate movie guide to 2012.
