What a difference a year makes.

At one point it looked like Mountain Pointe’s boys baseball team might win its Division I first-round playoff game in a blowout.

Devon Ryan had the game winning infield hit in the top of the 12th inning as No. 17 Perry beat No. 16 Corona del Sol in the first round of the Division I state softball tournament.

Baseball will have a grind of a playoff schedule upcoming for those not among the top eight seeds, but softball — especially Division I — appears to be deeper than ever. Or, at least, deeper than the past five years.

Heavy snow and icy mornings accompanied colder-than-normal average temperatures throughout Arizona in February, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm brought snow to the Tucson area and hail and sleet to the Phoenix metropolitan area Wednesday, disrupting flights, making for slushy rush-hour commutes and creating the rare sight of flurries at a professional golf event in southern Arizona.
