    It's a given at multiplexes these days that despite switch-off-your-cell-phone announcements and the occasional grumbling protest, whatever's onscreen will have to compete with tiny pockets of light from audience members unable to stay off their handhelds. Watching those glow patches come and go during "Disconnect" reinforces the film's position on how desensitized we've become to these technological intrusions. Not that Henry-Alex Rubin's schematic multi-strand drama is at all shy about articulating its themes.

    “Mr. Basha used to be a neighbor of mine, although I did not know immediately know it. My son, about 13, came home one day from carousing in the neighborhood. I asked where he had been. He replied ‘we were at Eddie’s house playing tennis.’ You know where this story is headed. It was Eddie Basha. He was like that, a kind man who was for the kids. Needless to say, I did not mind my son going there to play tennis. R.I.P. Mr. Basha.”

    Just before Christmas we had a guest in our home. A young man who is a U. S. Army staff sergeant, a soldier, an infantryman who has led men in combat on the fields of battle in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was passing through on his way to his latest tour of duty in Afghanistan where people want to kill him. He’s been to war a half-dozen times now since he enlisted a dozen years ago after graduating from high school. Going to war has been his adult life.
