A lot of people like to make predictions on what is going to happen. Too few of us take responsibility for their successes and, yes, their failures. Here is what I forecast on December 23, 2011 followed by what actually happened and my report card:
I am so tempted to write the words “I told you so” over and over again up to the 500-word limit allowed for a commentary in this newspaper. It would be so easy to gloat about how liberals won and conservatives lost. It would make me giddy to point out how Arizona is so out-of-touch with the rest of the Left Coast.

As the disgusting Arpaio political ads continue to flood local airways, I can’t help but find solace in the adage that like a zebra can’t hide its stripes neither can Arpaio cover up his pink underwear.
“During the debate Mitt Romney stole Obama’s platform. Now Romney’s heart bleeds for the middle class and calls for shared sacrifice and he’s treated like the Messiah. For years now Pres. Obama has called for shared sacrifice, and he’s accused of class- warfare.”
OK, so who got the bounce from the conventions? Obama-Biden did. Initially, they received a national ratings bump of about 4 percent. As of a week later, the bounce had increased to the high single digits.

What's with Ann Romney addressing us as “You People?” On July 19, presumptive GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, while reinforcing her husband's refusal to make public several years of tax returns, told ABC News “we've given all YOU PEOPLE need to know” about the family's finances. She went on to further denigrate us people by stating that “You know, you should really look at where Mitt has led his life, and where he's been financially.” Duh ... That's why we are asking for full disclosure on his finances, Ann.
June has proven to be a strong month for the Obama campaign. The president’s support for same-sex marriage, his executive order on immigration reform and the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold Obamacare has put Team Romney on the defense as evidenced by Romney’s “flip-flop” on whether the individual mandate in Obamacare is a penalty or a tax.

I had my stitches removed this morning. It has been two weeks since I had major surgery for malignant cutaneous desmoplastic melanoma on my upper back/lower neck. Sounds ominous right? It is. The surgery took five hours. The surgeon removed an area about 3 inches in diameter and about an inch deep. The incision is about 8 inches wide. This has been the biggest health challenge of my life.

I hope the readers of AFN recognize that Jon Beydler (“Arpaio is a criminal and should go to jail," May 23) is clearly demonstrating that he exhibits the same traits he claims Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has, most notably the trait of narcissism.
The U.S. Department of Justice filed its lawsuit against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the sheriff’s department and Maricopa County on Thursday, May 10, in Los Angeles.
“The University of Minnesota has approved co-ed bathrooms. This means the pick up line ‘do you come here often?’ will never die.”
“Apparently political corruption in Arizona is truly a bipartisan thing. In Arizona, the words politician and corrupt are synonymous.”
“In (Wednesday’s) paper was a short piece about proposing to ‘expand work visas for top foreign talent.’ Meanwhile, we have American engineers and nurses working in fast food joints. Why? Because as children they were brought here by parents who are illegal immigrants. Though as American as the rest of us they aren’t allowed to use their skills to benefit our country. It’s time for the Dream Act in some form.”
“When Vladimir Putin learned about our Republicans legislating voter fraud laws in numerous states it brought a tear to his eye, because he didn’t think of it first. His idea was to stuff the ballot box. In the 21st century U-S-of-A, you unstuff the opposition’s ballot box with sleazy legislation.”
“Mitt Romney isn’t a flip-flopper just because half the time he doesn’t mean what he says and the other half he doesn’t say what he means. If he becomes president, Sean Hannity from Fox News could become whitehouse translator for occasions like the State of the Union Address.”
“If Romney’s poll numbers get better and Obama’s get worse, I keep thinking about what the Dems are going to have to do to win this election. I don’t know what they will use as an excuse, but I can see Joe Biden not being on the ticket with Obama. I can see Hillary Clinton taking his place. Call me crazy, but I believe that this administration will do whatever it takes to win.”
“Will Congress wrap up the investigation of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and the Department of Justice (DoJ) involvement in the ‘Fast and Furious’ gun-walking scandal and cover-up before the November elections? Let’s hope so.”
“I picked up my free EVTRIB this morning and noticed a very odd scent coming from the paper, something like dog poop covered in vomit. Low and behold I open the paper right to Jon Beydler’s so-called column and found the source of the stench. It’s a darn shame you let someone with the writing proficiency of a 6-year-old grace your publication.”
“Obama is Forrest Gump. He was there when Roosevelt established Social Security, he was there when Kennedy established the Peace Corps, he was there when Carter established the Department of Energy. He was part of it all. What a loser.”

“I do not mind the ‘snowbirds’ who come to the Valley. They are older and wiser than most of us. They spend their money here and help our local economy. To those of you who complain about the increased traffic, their careful driving, etc., remember that you will be old one day too. I hope people won’t mind you living where you want to and treat you with respect. Have a great summer, ‘snowbirds.’ See you in the fall!”

“I would like to remind everyone out there that George Zimmerman is presumed innocent until proven guilty.”
“As someone who had to continue working full-time after my husband died 13 years ago, in order to support my two children with special needs, I believe that I could give a fair opinion of the mother with a second (outside) career vs. the mother who chooses to stay at home to raise her children. I worked more than full-time for 25 years before taking retirement to keep a promise to my daughter, who was then completing chemotherapy. I can tell you without a doubt that being a stay-at-home mother is by far easier! Like Ann Romney, I have an autoimmune disease. Unlike Ann Romney, I did not have the luxury of millions of dollars to cushion our existence, but I hold no grudges. We each make decisions and take responsibility for our lives.”
The letter from Don Smith (April 8) is yet another attack on hapless Tribune contributor Jon Beydler, who could do no better than pose a lame analogy comparing auto insurance to a mandate for health insurance. Smith dismisses Beydler’s analogy as “quite foolish.”
“I don’t want Andy Thomas to lose his livelihood. Having studied at the knee of Sheriff Arpaio perhaps he can assist Republican vice-presidential candidate Allen West in ferreting out those 81 card-carrying communists.”
Each Easter our HOA puts on an Easter egg hunt in the park located in our community's common area for all the children. The kids love it. This year we put out over 1,200 eggs in addition to stuffed monkeys, balls and color wheels that spin in the wind. It is quite a wonderful event. Our community is a reflection ofChandler's great diversity. Red, yellow, brown, black and white. They are all precious in our sight. We love all the little children of the world.
How appropriate that it was April Fools Day that Jon Beydler’s commentary was published in the Tribune.
