Joni Elliott has had a much harder time finding affordable health care coverage for her two-person business than she has washing the hundreds of windows she scrubs each week.

Apache Junction voters appear to have ousted Councilman R.E. Eck, who faced a recall election after being involved in a road rage incident. Challenger Clark Smithson won about 47 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election, compared with about 28 percent for Eck. Another challenger, Elliott Fisher, got about 23 percent, according to unofficial results from Pinal County elections officials.

Pinal County, known for its Democratic politics, will have contested races for most of its countywide offices. County Attorney Jim Walsh and School Superintendent Orlenda Roberts are uncontested Democratic incumbents.

Grassfire.com, a conservative advocacy organization, is trying to put political heat on Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl with a second round of Internet and television ads that ask, “Where’s the fence?”
