Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny is kicking off the second year of his "listening tours" starting Jan. 10. The event is hosted by the city's Neighborhood Advisory Committee, which worked with Tibshraeny last year to host meetings in locations across the city. During the tour, city staff will provide information about city services to residents and listen to concerns that need the city's attention.

Chandler Mayor Jay Tibshraeny was recently awarded the Dwight Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award by the East Valley Partnership. Each year, the group honors an individual from the East Valley for his or her “significant lifelong contributions to their community and exhibits the characteristics of a true leader,” according to a press release.

I loved this time of year growing up in Chandler. Downtown was an energetic place that always seemed to amplify the essence of the holidays. That spirit continues even today with a square that is brimming with new stores, restaurants, decorations and events that celebrate the season. Of course, the Tumbleweed Tree has been a constant. It is a great reminder of our past and how we have managed to keep Chandler’s traditions and heritage alive in the community despite tremendous growth and change these past couple of decades.
Chandler is dedicating a new park to a pioneer family who influenced the economic and political development of the community for many decades.

Wrapping up our community’s Centennial Anniversary year, this is a good time to reflect on the many positive things Chandler experienced in 2012. We kicked off our 100th anniversary in February and held a number of great events in May to honor the founding of this great city. It was heartening to see thousands of residents turn out for the events, but also to volunteer at the many activities that we held.
