Nobody plays deadpan strait man better than Jason Bateman. Nobody plays belly laugh shocking better than Melissa McCarthy. Based on this promising mismatched duo, “Identity Thief” looked like it might be the first sidesplitting comedy of the New Year.

FILE - In this undated publicity photo originally released by Fox, Jason Bateman, center, and Michael Cera, right, are shown in a scene from the TV series "Arrested Development." On Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, The creators and cast of "Arrested Development" at the New Yorker Festival announced plans for another season of the short-lived but critically acclaimed TV show, which went off the air in 2006 after just three seasons. They also discussed more concrete plans for a much-awaited movie. (AP Photo/Fox, Sam Urdank, File)
From What Happens in Vegas to The Ugly Truth, the romantic comedy genre is suffering one of the greatest depressions in cinematic history. The Switch is no less predictable than other recent romantic comedies. But you know what? I don't care. This film completely won me over with its charm and warmth. There's bond to be those who label the movie as overly sentimental. Nevertheless, I found The Switch to be an authentic pleasure from the protagonists opening monologue to the final shot.

Review: Mike Judge is back to the daily grind with “Extract,” but this time the writer-director tells his wacky working tales from the boss’ point of view: that of Jason Bateman’s Joel Reynold, owner of a flavor extract factory. It’s doubtful that this comedy will grab its audience in the same way, though. Judge’s characters are so one-note and their misadventures so ridiculous that it’s hard to get attached to them or care about how they turn out.
It seems ironic that the title of the movie is "Identity Thief" when its co-stars have such a firm grasp on their well-established screen personae.
Not a single moment rings true in "The Switch," which is unfortunate because it's actually about a situation in which a lot of women find themselves.
"The Change-Up" begins with a poop joke. And not just any poop joke - this is projectile poop from a baby girl into her daddy's mouth during a bleary-eyed, middle-of-the-night diaper change.
Judging from all the talent on display, I thought "The Change-Up" might have potential to be one of the funniest movies of the summer. Director David Dobkin has made some very well-crafted comedies, including "Shanghai Knights" and "Wedding Crashers." Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the screenwriting duo that previously brought us "The Hangover," wrote the film. On top of all that, "The Change-Up" stars Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, two more-than-gifted comedic actors. Bateman in particular was great in two comedies earlier this year, "Paul" and "Horrible Bosses."

ROME - "Juno," a movie about a Minnesota teen faced with an unplanned pregnancy, won the best film award at the Rome Film Festival.
After two seasons of dangerously low ratings despite nearly universal critical acclaim, Tony Hale, who plays childish, mother-worshiping youngest brother Buster Bluth on Fox’s "Arrested Development," has one pretty simple sentiment.
