Late June’s heat might not scream “sprinter showcase” but these kids are already different from most everyone else.

The outcome of the Division I girls state track meet was pretty much decided on Wednesday, but there were some surprises on the way for Chandler, as it won its sixth straight state championship on Saturday at Mesa Community College.
When I received an e-mail from the boss telling me about a skater who had won something or other at a national competition I thought, "That's entertainment." But after receiving the rundown from the skater's mom, I have a new respect for the SPORT of figure skating.
Cheetah (chét-ah) — a swift animal; Arizona Cheetahs — some of the fastest athletes in the state and possibly the nation. The Chandler-based track club returned from the United States Amateur Track and Field regional meet in El Paso, Texas, with berths in 45 events at the upcoming national meet.

After watching Sarah Fakler run for three seasons, it's become a foregone conclusion that if she's racing Arizona runners, she's going to win.

Darreyl Woodson had been away from the track for three years, so she had no idea how fast her legs would carry her.
Someday, the talent pool will dry up enough and the Chandler High girls track program will be challenged for state supremacy. That day, however, is not in the immediate future.
