A 25-foot tall downtown sculpture based on the iconic American Gothic painting is proving Mesa is a place that celebrates art - or, depending on your view, that it's Hicksville, USA.
When Gilbert Councilman Dave Crozier recently singled out Mesa — calling it a “petri dish” of seedy massage parlors spawning in every other corner of the city — instead of indignation, Mesa leaders pretty much acknowledged that they have a problem on their hands.
Q: I travel a lot and work with a lot of PDF files. Can you recommend a PDF editing app for my iPad? — Lee

I was highly offended by your choice to utilize Linda Turley-Hansen's guest commentary in your Sept. 11 edition. I usually find her offensive, but her "10 years later, we remain under attack" commentary tops them all. She states we remained safe during the Bush administration, but it was during his watch that critical recommendations and warnings (from former Clinton staffers) were ignored, followed soon after by the 9/11 attack. She forgets to mention that under Bush, we attacked a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 (adrenalin had to be used well?). I would also like to know in what way is President Obama not "loyal to America."
Q: I have amassed quite a collection of images from my digital camera and am having a tough time keeping them organized. Any suggestions? — Peter
Forget Bing Crosby's classic "White Christmas." For me, Christmastime will forever be evoked by David Cassidy crooning "My Christmas Card to You," and I still have the 1972 Partridge Family holiday record album to prove it.

Bill Richardson (Aug. 6 commentary) is right once again. Stop and think about 38,000 felony criminals wandering around the state, mostly in the Phoenix area. 38,000! These people are hard core, violent offenders. Their warrants remain unserved. Why? What is stopping our “toughest” sheriff from serving them? This is his core function, AND, they’re killing cops, our protectors, in record numbers!
Let’s get one thing straight: Mexican drug cartels supply us, as in U.S. It’s very doubtful they could survive without our market. Us baby-boomers opened Pandora’s drug box in the ’60s and can’t get the dang thing closed. For that, and my being an accessory during the fact, I sincerely apologize.
Q: After hearing about the reporter who had his entire laptop wiped by hackers, I’m wondering about the best way to backup all my photos to the Internet. What Internet photo storing sites do you recommend? - Greg
Today’s artists and crafters use the Internet not only to promote themselves, but to sell their wares. Good-quality images sell a product; inferior images don’t.
