    Valle Del Sol will host an IEPs and Ice Cream event 5-7 p.m. Aug. 18. The event will cover the purpose of the IEP - individualized education plan for kids with special needs; who should be a member of the IEP team and attend the meetings; how parents can prepare for and participate in the IEP process; and how to track a child's progress. IEPs are written agreements between a school, teachers and parents outlining services a student may receive. Parents can bring their children's IEPs for a reference.

    Like many of you, we celebrated with a certain degree of pride when our son graduated from high school last week. Our graduate was different than most. For one thing, he is 6 feet, 7 inches tall and is 21 years old. He also has autism. You can learn a lot more about autism, and you should because one in every 110 children born in the U.S. is on the autism spectrum. What I would like to share with you is that I have not graduated. I have, however, learned a few things. Here are four of them.

    Today, many children are being suspended from school or placed in a self-contained classroom due to behavior issues. Behavior issues can occur for many different reasons. Children may try to use inappropriate behavior to get attention in the classroom, or there may be un met academic needs that are not being address. If parents and teachers provide the desired attention and/or avoid punishing the bad behavior, the inappropriate behavior will be reinforced and will likely continue.
