Highland hopes it gets another shot at Pinnacle in the girls soccer state tournament.
Gilbert Highland turned the tables on Phoenix Pinnacle, hanging on for a 25-23 win to ruin the Pioneers’ homecoming on Friday in a 5A nonregion game.
Gilbert Highland's stout defense did not yield Friday, and its offense capitalized with quick-strike goals in a 2-0 victory over Phoenix Desert Vista in the Tempe Diablos Soccer Tournament championship game at Tempe Sports Complex.
It's said that no one likes to settle a soccer game with a penalty kick shootout. Least of all in the state championship.

In order to move forward, soccer coaches first must look back. At least that’s what Tim Barmettler does at Gilbert Highland, where his Hawks are the defending Class 5A-I state champions.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Kyle Ciliento thought he was never going to score a goal in high school. As a freshman at Phoenix Pinnacle, Ciliento failed to score in his first two matches.
The good news for boys soccer teams this season in Class 5A-I is that Phoenix Brophy lost two of the most talented players in the state to graduation.
Fifth-ranked Chandler Basha and Gilbert Highland each had a goal in mind in trying to grind out a victory Friday night in their 5A Central Region showdown at Highland High.
Brett Collins led all scorers with 33 points as host Mountain Pointe cruised in the fourth quarter Tuesday to secure a victory over Marcos de Niza, 65-51, in a boys 5A Central Region contest.
