  1. article Letter: Clearing up some stats on gun violence

    Wednesday, August 15, 2012 11:06 am

Although I happen to agree with David Rich’s lament (Aurora Tragedy, Aug. 9, 2012) about media over emphasis of firearm events, his statistics need clarifying. Wikipedia.org relates these 2007 data: 31,224 firearm deaths of which 17,352 were suicides and 12,632 were homicides. In 2005, of the 10,100 homicides, 75 percent were by handguns, 4 percent rifles and 5 percent shotguns. (This doesn’t add up to 100 percent, so what other types of firearms remains a mystery.) Of note though is data from Philadelphia showing that 93 percent of shooting victims had a criminal record.

  • article Letter: Another assault weapons ban will not impact gun violence

    Saturday, January 19, 2013 10:27 am

As you know, we had one assault weapons ban (1994 – 2004). What good did this ban do? During this first assault weapons ban we experienced the most horrific school shooting in our nation’s history — the Columbine Massacre.

  • article Is gun violence like a disease? Doctors think so

    Saturday, August 11, 2012 12:00 pm

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Mass shootings have rattled nerves and renewed calls for stricter gun laws. Doctors are thinking bigger. Gun violence is a social disease, they say, and it could be curbed with a public health approach like the product safety changes and driving laws that slashed traffic fatalities decades ago, even as cars on the road increased.

  • article Governor: New gun laws won't stop violence

    Friday, May 15, 2009 3:59 pm

  • article Letter: The answer to violence isn’t more violence

    Friday, July 27, 2012 9:12 am

The morons on the Right think the answer to violence in America is to arm more people with guns. The shooting in Aurora, Colorado at the Batman movie premiere is a glaring example of why severe gun control is needed. Everyone beLIEves they can carry a gun. What if someone else had a gun and started shooting in the chaos of that smoke-filled theater. Do we need 40 dead and 100-plus wounded? Twelve or more dead and 50 wounded is too many. The punk had four weapons, one being an assault rifle, tear gas, and a bullet-proof vest. The 2nd Amendment does not apply to every American citizen, unless you are in a militia. Those who love their guns and that 2nd Amendment overlook the militia part. Our founding fathers are most likely turning over in their graves with the direction the Republicans are taking this nation. Our nation is destroying itself through laws that are supposed to protect us. We as a nation — well our politicians on the Right care more about war and the world, than our own people at home. We need to fix our problems before we solve the world’s. Our first fix should be gun control. I’m sure the hate mail will come rolling in if this gets published. So be it. It’s still America, and free speech reigns supreme. Read the 2nd Amendment. Rather, I’ll include it for you all to read. “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

  • Gun Control

Tom and Caren Teves, parents of Alex Teves who was killed during the Aurora, Colo. shooting share a brief moment with Jennifer Longdon, a victim of gun violence who was paralyzed when hit by random gunfire. The Teves family and Longdon were part of a group turning in over 120,000 signatures to Senator Jeff Flake's office, encouraing him to vote for stronger gun control laws. • Gun Politics

FILE - In this April 16, 2007, file photo, state and local police wait for a building to be cleared by police on the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Va., following a shooting incident. Gun control advocates sputter at their own impotence. The National Rifle Association is politically ascendant. And Barack Obama’s White House pledges to safeguard the Second Amendment in its first official response to the deaths of at least 12 innocents in a mass shooting at a new Batman movie screening in suburban Denver. Once, every highly publicized outbreak of gun violence produced strong calls from Democrats and a few Republicans for tougher controls on firearms. Now those pleas are muted, a political paradox that’s grown more pronounced in an era scarred by Columbine, Virginia Tech, the wounding of a congresswoman and now the shootings in a suburban movie theater where carnage is expected on-screen only.
