After attending a fan fest at the stadium several years ago, Basio knew she had to become part of the action that includes the smell of hot dogs, organ music played between innings and the laid-back atmosphere spring baseball provides fans.

    Jim Ripley: Nothing is more precious in the desert than shade and water. Throw in the views of the Sonoran Desert, the bluff and mountains and you have Coon Bluff. I’ve seen many beautiful places, and this is one of them, I decided.

    ON THE RIVER: Kayakers and tubers often launch at Coon Bluff and float by the fishermen and picnickers along the bank. The river gets so busy with tubers over the summer that authorities on busy holiday weekends have to close the Bush Highway.

    The news of three airline carriers (Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier) at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, while seemingly exciting to the community, did not really cause much of a ripple in my thoughts when recently reported by the local media. After all, the airport “is so far away” and “only goes to off-beat locations,” right? Well, I recently found out that those perceptions were innaccurate.
