SALT LAKE CITY — Mormon church president Thomas S. Monson on Saturday announced plans to build five new temples in the United States and abroad. Temples will be built in Brigham City, Utah; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Concepcion, Chile; Fortaleza, Brazil; and Sapporo, Japan, Monson said.

 Tempe Prep continued its best-ever start in football by trouncing Fort Thomas 46-8 and improving to 5-0 on the season Friday at Arizona Lutheran Academy in Phoenix.

Quarterback Gary Hall ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as Canyon State Academy opened the season with a 34-0 shutout of visiting Fort Thomas Friday in a 1A non-region game.

Division I, II, III, & IV State Tournament (24 team bracket): Four (4) teams from each of the three sections for a total of 12 teams will earn an automatic bid based on how they finish within their sectional tournament. The final 12 spots will be based on overall seeding. The bracket will be seeded according to overall seeding of the 24 teams. Teams seeded #1 to #8 will get a first round bye.

The pairings for the 2A boys and girls state basketball tournament that begin this week have been released. Girls first-round games are on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and boys first-round games are on Wednesday. Here are the pairings for each.

Jenna Pearson scored 21 points but it wasn't enough for Gilbert Surrey Garden Christian (26-6) as it fell to Rock Point 65-62 in overtime Thursday at Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain High School in a 1A state girls basketball tournament game. Amanda Martin added 18 points for the Knights.

WASHINGTON - The Army's 3rd Infantry Division, which helped lead the charge to Baghdad at the outset of the war, will return next year and become the first Army division to serve three tours in Iraq. More than 3 1/2 years into the war, the Army and Marine Corps are straining to keep a steady flow of combat and support forces to Iraq while giving the troops sufficient time between deployments for rest and retraining.
