The Tempe Fire Department is training residents in January for emergency preparation. The training is part of the city's Community Emergency Response Team, which is a nationwide initiative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. CERT volunteers are trained by fire department personnel in areas like disaster preparedness, fire safety, treating injuries, and search and rescue. The program's goal is that citizens will put these skills to use in the event of daily or large-scale emergencies.
The Tempe Fire Department is offering emergency preparation training at two sessions this spring. The training addresses disaster preparedness, fire safety, treating injuries and search and rescue, allowing volunteers to put these skills into use in daily or large-scale emergencies. The program is part of the city’s Community Emergency Response Team, which already has hundreds of members. The training will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursdays from Feb. 24 through March 31 and on Tuesdays from March 1 through April 5. Thanks to a thunderstorm Monday night, the Queen Creek Fire Department took its chance to test its new emergency deployment plan a few hours after instituting it this week. The plan reallocates resources so more trucks are staffed when the department is expecting a high volume of calls, such as with a thunderstorm, said assistant fire chief Ron Knight.
