When principal Ray Mercado arrived at Gilbert Elementary School three years ago, he set about making improvements.
Students in Shannon Miller's class at Four Peaks Elementary School in Apache Junction collected stuff animals for the local fire department to use when helping young victims of fires. The students also wrote thank you letters to the firefighters after learning about the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
