Although I agree with Don Kennedy (“Are you ready for this,” AFN, March 30) that the United States should greatly expand oil drilling, he expresses a common misconception about our ability to be independent of foreign oil. It is unlikely that the U.S. will be able to increase its oil production enough to offset a major part of the oil we import. Last year the U.S. imported 57 percent of the oil it used. It is naïve to believe that we will be able to double our oil production by drilling in U.S. territory. I believe that we should drill for whatever increase we can get and to establish reserves for the future, but the only way the U.S. will achieve independence from foreign oil is to use less.

NEW YORK - Eddie Murphy has said that he's not sure if he's the father of ex-Spice Girl Melanie Brown's unborn child. Brown, however, says she's quite certain that he is. "I am obviously upset and distressed at some of the comments made by Eddie Murphy to the media," Brown, 31, said in a statement released Thursday by her publicist, Nadine Bibi.

LOS ANGELES - Scary Spice went to court Wednesday to try to scare up some child support from Eddie Murphy. The 32-year-old singer, whose real name is Melanie Brown, filed a petition in Superior Court that seeks to legally establish Murphy as the father of her 4-month-old daughter, Angel Iris Murphy Brown.
The Academy Drum and Bugle Corps are going through intensive rehearsals before they go on a summer-long tour which they hope will end in Indianapolis at the Drum Corps International World Championships in August.
