    On Jan. 16, students from 14 Valley schools gathered at Gilbert’s Higley Center for the Performing Arts for the Building Bridges program to fight bullying in schools. In May of last year, Kyrene Altadeña Middle School students participated in the Bully Academy Webquest, an online course involving reading articles, watching videos about bullying and most importantly, talking about it. After all, this is about how young people learn to express their emotions. In November 2011, students from Chandler’s Tarwater Elementary School spent a day focused on kindness, respect, and friendship.

    Disabled athletes will come together Sept. 29 for the 2012 Ability Ball at the annual fundraiser for Arizona Disabled Sports. The event will include recognizing two outstanding athletes for their performance in the adaptive sports programs, as well as a silent and live auction, dinner, music and dancing. The fundraiser supports AzDs in its mission to provide quality sports and recreation programs for individuals with disabilities. AzDs is a nonprofit that has provided special events and sports competitions since 1989.

     “The Intouchables””, a 2011 French film that has received tremendous acclaim over the past year, will be premiering in Phoenix starting on Friday, June 1. Starring François Cluzet and Omar Sy, the movie tells a story of the relationship built between two dichotomous characters: one a wealthy French aristocrat in his fifties and the other, a twenty-something Senegalese man who lives in the projects of Paris.
