Scottsdale Community College will open a satellite campus this fall to serve the business education needs of busy working adults and employers mainly in the Scottsdale Airpark area.

MONTREAL - A gunman in a black trench coat and sporting a mohawk haircut opened fire Wednesday at a Montreal college and wounded at least 20 people - six critically - before he apparently was killed by police, witnesses and authorities said.

The Chandler Unified School District wants to add a college preparatory school to its repertoire this fall. Already, the district offers four elementary academies, which include increased academic rigor, uniforms and smaller class sizes.

Students at Mesa’s ASU Preparatory Academy don’t just attend high school on a college campus; they attend classes where college professors deliver guest lectures, and they rub elbows with university students during campus service projects.

Mary Chin, a teacher at Mesa Preparatory Academy who is finishing her teaching credentials at Arizona State University, has been awarded the Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship, valued at $175,000. The fellowship is given to “premier high school math and science teachers” as they start their careers.

Latin students at Desert Vista High School in the Tempe Union High School District rose early one November morning and participated in the MS Walk at the Phoenix Zoo. Dressed in togas, they joined fellow Latin students from Chandler Preparatory, Scottsdale Preparatory, Glendale Preparatory, and Xavier and Brophy college preparatories to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. In late October, the students also participated in the Autism Walk at Tempe Town Lake and sponsored a collection for the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

Sara Elizabeth Matsumoto of Ahwatukee Foothills was named to the dean’s list at Washington University in St. Louis for the fall 2011 semester. Matsumoto is a graduate of Tempe Preparatory Academy and is enrolled in the university’s college of arts and sciences.

Several East Valley students are vying to become an Arizona representative in the U.S. Senate Youth Program. Two Arizona high school students will be selected to spend a week in March visiting Capitol Hill, the White House, the Pentagon and more. Winners will also receive a $5,000 college scholarship. There are 10 finalists, including Jevin Hodge and Thomas Liu of Tempe's McClintock High School, Stephen Bergauer of Chandler's Hamilton High School, Meera Kumar of Ahwatukee Foothills' Horizon Community Learning Center, and Caleb Peckham and Jeremy Cappello Lee of Tempe Preparatory Academy.

Eight Arizona high school students were honored last month for earning a top composite score on the ACT college admissions exam.

Brophy College Preparatory announced that 2012-2013 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists include Ahwatukee Foothills residents Mark Miller, Derek Blayney-Moore and Ricardo Jimenez.

PHOENIX — A $50,000 bond has been set for a former Brophy College Preparatory teacher accused of sexually abusing several students in past years.

Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 58th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition. One of the semifinalists is Mark Miller of Ahwatukee Foothills. Miller attended St. John Bosco Catholic School from its opening in 2001 (first grade) through 2009 (eighth grade). He is currently a senior at Brophy College Preparatory school in Phoenix.
