    Mary Chin, a teacher at Mesa Preparatory Academy who is finishing her teaching credentials at Arizona State University, has been awarded the Knowles Science Teaching Fellowship, valued at $175,000. The fellowship is given to “premier high school math and science teachers” as they start their careers.

  • article Desert Vista Latin students take MS Walk

    Latin students at Desert Vista High School in the Tempe Union High School District rose early one November morning and participated in the MS Walk at the Phoenix Zoo. Dressed in togas, they joined fellow Latin students from Chandler Preparatory, Scottsdale Preparatory, Glendale Preparatory, and Xavier and Brophy college preparatories to raise money for multiple sclerosis research. In late October, the students also participated in the Autism Walk at Tempe Town Lake and sponsored a collection for the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

    Several East Valley students are vying to become an Arizona representative in the U.S. Senate Youth Program. Two Arizona high school students will be selected to spend a week in March visiting Capitol Hill, the White House, the Pentagon and more. Winners will also receive a $5,000 college scholarship. There are 10 finalists, including Jevin Hodge and Thomas Liu of Tempe's McClintock High School, Stephen Bergauer of Chandler's Hamilton High School, Meera Kumar of Ahwatukee Foothills' Horizon Community Learning Center, and Caleb Peckham and Jeremy Cappello Lee of Tempe Preparatory Academy.

These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition. One of the semifinalists is Mark Miller of Ahwatukee Foothills. Miller attended St. John Bosco Catholic School from its opening in 2001 (first grade) through 2009 (eighth grade). He is currently a senior at Brophy College Preparatory school in Phoenix.

    Gov. Jan Brewer has selected Scott Boisvert, a senior at Chandler's Basha High School, and Victor Ruiz-Cornejo, a senior at Tucson's AmeriSchools College Preparatory Academy to represent the state at the 2011 National Youth Science Camp Competition in Charleston, W.V. in June.
