The Pac-10 has come out strong this season, and a group of talented freshmen are a big reason why. Three of the best are Arizona State’s Christian Polk (at right) Arizona’s Chase Budinger (below) and Washington’s Spencer Hawes.

TEMPE - Christian Polk's 35-footer at the shot-clock buzzer with 12.7 seconds to play gave Arizona State a wild 67-64 come-from-behind victory over Iowa on Saturday night. Arizona State outscored Iowa 19-4 over the final six minutes. Polk, one of three freshmen who started for first-year coach Herb Sendek, found himself under tight defense from the basket when he let loose the game-winning shot.
With freshmen like Christian Polk and Jerren Shipp on the roster, the future is bright for the Arizona State basketball team. The present may be a bit bleak at times, though, especially against veteran-laden teams like Northern Arizona.
Sometimes good just isn’t good enough.

TEMPE - Chase Budinger scored 23 points and Marcus Williams added 19 as Arizona defeated Arizona State 61-58 Sunday night, the Wildcats' 24th win in the last 25 meetings between the in-state rivals.
At 9:33 on Saturday night, Arizona State coach Herb Sendek told his players to enjoy their 67-64 upset of Iowa until midnight. Since then, the players’ focus presumably has been on tonight’s contest against Northern Colorado.
There’s a chance Arizona State will be blown out a few times once conference play begins next week. When it falls behind by a dozen or so points at home this season, do not — repeat, do not — leave the building. Because these Sun Devils possess whatever it is that allows teams to rally from big deficits late.
After hurdling a row of courtside seats while saving a tipped pass, Arizona State’s Sylvester Seay had two choices. He could take the easy way back by simply re-entering the court the way he exited it. Or he could dash behind the scorer’s table to the other end of the floor in an attempt to get in on the developing fast break.

It didn’t take long for Jerren Shipp and Christian Polk to impact the Arizona State record book. By simply stepping onto the floor for the opening tip of Monday’s loss to Northern Arizona, they became the fourth freshman duo of the last 20 years to start in their ASU debuts.
