Chandler’s Arizona College Prep-Erie earned a Top 100 on Newsweek’s 2013 America’s Best High Schools list.

Here are the first two rounds of the boys volleyball state tournament, which begins Saturday and continues May 7 (quarterfinals), May 9 (semifinals) and May 11 (championship):

Josh Webster pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on seven hits to lead host Mesquite to a 4-1 victory over Hamilton on Friday.

Mattie Merrell pitched a complete game, two-hitter, while also hitting a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to lead host Queen Creek to a 2-1 victory over Higley on Thursday.

Down two runs in the bottom of the seventh, Hamilton’s Ryan Peep smacked a walk off two-run double to propel the Huskies baseball team to a 7-6 comeback victory over visiting Horizon on Tuesday.

Highland is the one elite boys volleyball team which doesn’t compete in the preseason Wolf Howl Invitational at Chandler, so while the other programs could size each other up early, the Hawks were a bit of a wild card.

Samantha Leighty and Bailey Bergman combined to finish a perfect 7-for-7 at the plate, with three doubles, a home run and two RBI as host Campo Verde came back to upset Queen Creek,  8-7 in 10 innings, Thursday.
