    President Bush's reappointment of Federal Reserve Board chairman Alan Greenspan and his quick confirmation by the Senate are both political no-brainers. To do otherwise would needlessly roil the financial markets, something no one wants to do, particularly in an election year.

As chairman, Hallman's duties include heading a finance committee, working on its budget and contract selections. Hallman has served on MAG's regional council since 2004 and also is a member of its economic development committee.

    PHOENIX (AP) — Freshman Republican Sen. Don Shooter of Yuma is the new chairman of the Arizona Senate Appropriations Committee.

    Shooter is Senate President Russell Pearce's choice announced Friday to replace Andy Biggs as Appropriations chairman.

    Fellow Republican senators elected Gilbert's Biggs as majority leader in March after ousting Scott Bundgaard from that leadership post because of his arrest in a domestic violence incident.

    Pearce says in a statement that Shooter is a strong fiscal conservative who works well with his colleague and Republican Gov. Jan Brewer.

    WASHINGTON — The Senate has confirmed Ben Bernanke for a second term as chairman of the Federal Reserve. The Senate voted 70-30 on Thursday to reappoint Bernanke amid criticism of his judgment ahead of the financial crisis and his support for massive Wall Street bailouts. His supporters credited him for engineering a financial industry rescue in time to prevent a catastrophic collapse.
