The 5A Central Region race has been the hardest to handicap most of this decade because the teams are pretty even. The last two seasons are an illustration in terms of playoff qualifiers and the last four in terms of region champs.

Here's the 5A Central softball all-region team:
Two weeks into 5A Central Region warfare and what appeared to be a jumbled up mess of a region is showing separation. The culprits? Gilbert Mesquite (4-2) and Mesa Mountain View (3-2). And don’t forget Chandler Basha (4-1).

It was a bounce-back week for the 5A Central Region as more than half the region’s teams won Thursday for the first time this season.

Arizona is redefining the term “hot and dry,” with special emphasis on the “dry” part.
When: Today and Thursday, starting at 5 p.m. both days.
The 5A Division I state boys basketball tournament is Central Region-heavy for Wednesday’s semifinals. A banner year to be sure for the Central, which has been a major player in 5A boys basketball this decade.

2A Central Region
Most of the schools in the newly formed 5A Central Region, which promises to be fiercely competitive, open 2009 with seasoned quarterbacks. That makes for happy coaches.
It cannot get any tougher than it is in the girls’ 5A-I Central Region.

Mountain Pointe’s baseball team took care of business the first two series of 5A Central Region play back in March by sweeping Desert Vista and Corona del Sol. The Pride can finally wrap up the region’s top spot today if they knock off Marcos de Niza in the regular-season finale.
Kristy Pechous of Desert Vista will play defending 5A state champion Lynley Wasson of Corona del Sol for the 5A Central Region girls tennis title at 3 p.m. today at Kiwanis Park in Tempe.
Corona del Sol won the 5A Central Region with a three game sweep of Desert Vista, 27-25, 25-22, 25-22, Thursday at Desert Vista.
