Varsity Xtra: Burcar said Baruti has always worked hard and been supportive of the team, but there has been an extra bounce in his step the past couple weeks, knowing his return was imminent.

It was a lovely sight on a lovely Monday afternoon, and Shane Burcar wanted a picture. The Mesa boys basketball coach stood at the Lenox Hotel near the Boston Marathon finish line at 2:37 p.m., struck by the scene playing out in front of him. Marathon runners of all ages finished the 26.2-mile trek as flags from multiple nations waved in the background. Crowds packed both sides of the street.
The Mesa boys basketball team finished up a productive week on Friday.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association's executive board has placed the Mesa High boys basketball team on probation for one year on a recruiting violation. The penalty will keep the Jackrabbits out of this year's postseason, but will expire before next year's state tournament.
