Basha has moved up quickly. The Bears went 8-2 in 4A in 2004, then reached the playoffs last season in their first year at 5A, but return only one starter on offense.

The next coach at Basha will have a cupboard full of talent with players (from left) Maurice Kirby, Torren Jones, and Jaron Hopkins. All three are getting Division I colleges’ attention and make Basha a state title contender next year, if they all stay at the school.
Outlook: Injuries have struck Gilbert the last couple games and are adding up. That’s not good news for the Tigers as they enter Fiesta Region play tonight against Basha, with the likes of Hamilton and Chandler waiting in the weeks to come.
Outlook: The Bears got off on the right foot last week at Tucson, pulling away in the second half.
Polarizing figure Bernie Busken will be the next coach of the Basha football team, pending school district approval, principal Ken James said on Monday.
