Five hundred years ago there was a group of Christians living in Europe known as the Anabaptists. These are not to be confused with today’s Baptists, though the groups do share points of common history. The name Anabaptist was not so much a description as it was a condemnation.
More than a decade ago, former Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court installed a massive granite monument inscribed with the Ten Commandments in the rotunda of the Alabama State Judicial Building. Two years later it was removed by court order as a violation of the separation of church and state. Shortly thereafter, Justice Moore was also removed by court order from the Alabama State Judicial Building.
When I was a child my family lived hand to mouth. We were loved and cared for, but the cupboards were often more bare than full. I often say that we ate a lot of Hamburger Helper in those days, but with only the Helper.
Rifling through old family records I discovered the obituary of my great-grandmother. Her name was Ola Whitfield, a simple woman born in the 19th century, and so much like the other sharecroppers in the Deep South at the time.

As I traveled through my home state of Georgia not long ago, I came upon a little Baptist church stuck away in the woods. That’s not unusual. At times Georgia seems to be overrun with Baptist churches; that and kudzu.
It’s difficult to comprehend the struggle a child suffering in a third-world country goes through every day and how your small contribution to a nonprofit makes a difference. The African Children’s Choir, performing this month in the East Valley, will give you that personal experience with not only the cause but the kids you’re supporting.
The African Children’s Choir, a nonprofit humanitarian and relief organization dedicated to helping Africa’s children, will perform African songs and dances alongside the Chandler Children’s Choir on March 21.
Do you believe a photographer who identifies as homosexual should be punished for refusing to photograph an event celebrating the Westboro Baptist Church’s hateful ideas? Do you believe a Jewish printer should be threatened for declining to promote a conference criticizing Israel? Do you believe a pacifist should be coerced to paint pro-war posters for a rally? If you believe all these are wrong, you should support Arizona’s SB 1062—because that’s what the bill’s about rather than the things you may have heard.

There was no warmth outside the walls of the First Baptist Church of Mesa on Thursday night. Winter won’t start for another two weeks, but the temperature — cold enough to cause the ears to tingle and burn a little — was a reminder the line between seasons is flexible.
Mike Sproul isn’t defined by one title.
A child is born, a family is healed, and a sermon on forgiveness is delivered with sledgehammer subtlety in "Black Nativity," a bold but clumsy attempt to bring Langston Hughes' popular musical to life onscreen.
Located in the spacious backyard of Roger Ball, First Baptist Church of Tempe’s senior pastor, this walk-through replica of landmarks from the birth, life and death of Christ provides a soulful pause from the craziness of the season. The tour takes about 10 minutes, but all the other homes on the cul-de-sac at Natal Circle in Mesa are decorated to the hilt, so there is plenty to gawk at if you park and wander up and down the street that has become an East Valley Christmas destination.
