Even with a healthy appreciation for the arts and a career that puts me in close proximity to them — not to mention a cousin who’s an accomplished professional ballerina — I can’t say I clamor for a night at the ballet.

It's that time of year again, the time of year that critics, film snobs and the nerdy elite await with bated breath: Awards season. Revealed on January 25th, the nominations for the 83rd Annual Academy Awards came into the world with the usual fanfare and debatable snubs. Leading the pack is The King's Speech with 12 nominations, followed closely by surprise contender True Grit with 10. Early favorites The Social Network and Inception are in a tie for third with eight noms each. Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan is the most bizarrely fascinating film since Mulholland Dr. in 2001. This is a dreamlike moviegoing experience that will mesmerize some and make others unintentionally laugh at its sheer bewilderment. Whether you dig Black Swan or not though, it's certainly a picture you'll be talking about with your fellow audience members after the screening is finished. Between Shutter Island, Inception, and now Black Swan, 2010 has proven to be a truly great year for movies with the audacity to steer up thoughtful conversation.

"Black Swan" is at once gorgeous and gloriously nutso, a trippy, twisted fantasy that delights and disturbs in equal measure.
