“Inside Llewyn Davis” is a new kind of project for the Coen brothers to take on. To an extent, the film is a musical of sorts along the lines of “Once.” In addition to being a love letter to old folk songs, it’s also one of the most brutally honest, if not disheartening, movies about the cruel nature of show business. While different territory for the masterful directing duo, “Inside Llewyn Davis” still has the Coen’s distinctive signature all over it. As with many of their films, they find the comedy in bleakness and the bleakness in comedy, resulting in a narrative that’s either saying a lot or saying nothing at all. However you view it, boy is it fascinating to watch.
It’s no secret that men like Keith Richards, John Lennon and Frank Sinatra are the first to be mentioned when talking about the evolution of music. But what about women like Joan Jett and Tina Turner, who are equally responsible for putting rock and roll on the map?
After watching two very good college football teams go at it last night, I felt compelled to express my thoughts regarding the seemingly prevailing culture of sports fans. Even though the final score was in favor of Stanford, I found it quite disturbing regarding two items: the TV commentators and the home team’s fans. Until it was evident that Stanford had thoroughly trounced ASU, the TV men could not talk enough about ASU, its seven straight home wins, its fabulous coach, Todd Graham, his PAC-12 Coach of the Year honors, while panning the ASU faithful while not once showing any of the Stanford fans in the stadium. I might add full disclosure: I am an former ASU varsity letter winner in baseball and I have a grandson playing for Stanford.
If some new blood can enter the girls soccer scene this season, the winter months could offer even more of a refresher beyond this chilly air.
Everyone had reservations when it was announced Peter Jackson would be splitting up “The Hobbit” into a trilogy. Do we really need three separate movies? Can’t this 300-page book be done in one movie? Isn’t this just a ploy to milk a franchise and make an extra couple billion dollars? When “An Unexpected Journey” finally came out last December, we all found that these initial concerns were pretty much spot-on.
Thanks in large part to a dominant ground game, Stanford racked up 517 total yards in a 38-14 win over ASU in the Pac-12 title game Saturday.
Tempe officials are expected large crowds and lots of traffic on Saturday, thanks to a big football game at Arizona State University's Sun Devil Stadium and numerous other public events in the Phoenix suburb.
Pac-12 championship game participants Stanford and ASU ranked second and third, respectively, in the conference in total defense during the regular season.
To compensate for a lack of change at the top of the boys basketball landscape as the 2012-2013 season begins, the girls basketball world might pick up the slack.
The chill of winter means basketball is already underway with a plethora of early-season games and tournaments, and yet the question remains:
Three years ago, Mesa Public Schools started using a creative mechanism to bring more money into the district: advertising on their school buses, and the decision has brought in upwards of $100,000 per year.
