  • article A look at military-style semiautomatic rifles

    Saturday, December 29, 2012 9:45 am

PHOENIX — Military-style semiautomatic rifles have been used in at least four high-profile shootings in the past year. Bushmaster variations of the weapon have been used in two recent attacks, including the Newtown, Conn., school shootings and the Christmas Eve ambush slayings of two New York firefighters. While commonly called the AR-15, Colt and Armalite have been the only companies to make weapons by that specific name. Many other manufacturers, however, now sell similar versions of the rifle largely styled after the military's fully automatic M-16.

  • article Letter: Do arpaio signs break political rules?

    Thursday, August 9, 2012 7:17 am

So Sheriff Joe is offering a reward (Aug. 5 Tribune) to catch whomever is vandalizing his “Elect Arpaio” signs he placed everywhere on taxpayer-owned public right-of-way. Who’s responsible for fining Joe for violating state laws ARS 9-500.14 and ARS 15-511, which forbid ALL electioneering on government-controlled property? One law forbids all election signs on city-controlled easement, where most of his signs are. The second with a per sign fine, forbids such signs on school district-owned easement, where politicians love to put their sign graffiti. Doesn’t anyone care about the annual sign mess?

  • article Letter: NRA ads show lack of shame

    Friday, July 27, 2012 6:59 am

I’m a supporter of the 2nd Amendment, but I was appalled on Saturday, July 21 to see on local (television) the 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. airing of an NRA-sponsored advertisement, soliciting donations for the NRA and NRA membership: “The Secret War on Guns: Anti-gun schemes threaten American lives and attack American freedom.” This was 30 minutes of hyper-partisan non-stop NRA spokesmen extolling the virtues of guns and vilifying any issues around gun control. And this is the next day, after the “Movie Massacre” killings in Aurora, Colo., using a “legal” AR-15 assault rifle. This is the height of arrogance, of insensitivity and poor timing. Don’t any of these people have any shame?
