Freedom Writer Tony Becerra recently spoke with students at Mesa’s Academy With Community Partners. Becerra shared his experience being a member of the "Freedom Writers," a group of Long Beach High School freshmen in the 1990s who wrote about living in a gang-ridden area of Los Angeles. Their story was told in a book and movie starring Hilary Swank.

Board OKs academy's move to Saguaro
In a review of its 2010 charitable cash donations, event sponsorships and in-kind standbys, Southwest Ambulance announced it had contributed to more than 250 local events and organizations in central Arizona. The company also commended its employees for their personal commitment to improving the communities in which they live and work by volunteering at hundreds of events and serving on dozens of community boards.
